Super Cruise® and How It Works
Super Cruise® is GM’s cutting-edge hands-free driver-assistance technology that lets drivers travel hands-free on over 750,000 km of highways in both Canada and the USA. It combines advanced precision LiDAR map data, GPS, radar, cameras, and OnStar connectivity with Adaptive Cruise Control to steer, accelerate, and brake the vehicle while keeping it centered in the lane and at a set speed.
Super Cruise® only operates on roads that GM has mapped and approved for hands-free driving and only when lane markings are clear, and sensors are unobstructed. While the vehicle is using Super Cruise®, a driver-attention system monitors your eyes and head position to help ensure you stay engaged and ready to take control when needed.
How to Activate and Disengage Super Cruise®
To use Super Cruise in your Cadillac:
- Turn on Adaptive Cruise Control by pressing the Adaptive Cruise Control button on the steering wheel.
- When you’re on a compatible highway with good lane markings and the system validates outside conditions, a Super Cruise® icon will light up on the instrument cluster.
- Press the Super Cruise® button on the steering wheel. Once both the icon and the light bar on the steering wheel turn green, the system is actively steering and maintaining your speed — and you may remove your hands from the wheel.
To disengage, simply press the Super Cruise® button again, press the brake pedal, or take firm control of the steering wheel. In most models, Adaptive Cruise Control and Forward Collision features revert to your previous settings once you turn Super Cruise® off.
Changing Lanes and Maneuvers
Super Cruise® offers enhanced lane-change support on many of our models. With Turn Signal Activated Lane Change or Automatic Lane Change enabled, the system can help perform a single lane change when you activate your turn signal or when it detects a safe opening on its own.
If you prefer a manual lane change while Super Cruise® is active, simply take control of the wheel — the steering wheel light bar will turn blue — and once you’re centered in the new lane, the system can resume hands-free driving.
Safety, Alerts, and Obstructions
Safety is built into the design of Super Cruise®, but you are always responsible for the vehicle. The system continuously monitors traffic, road conditions, and the driver's attention. If Super Cruise® detects an unexpected situation — such as poor lane markings, sensors blocked by snow or dirt, or an abrupt obstacle — it will alert you with visual and audible warnings and, if necessary, disengage and prompt you to take over immediately.
If the system still requires you to intervene and you do not respond to alerts, the vehicle can gradually slow down and even come to a stop in its lane. OnStar Emergency-Certified Advisors are also connected and can assist if a driver becomes unresponsive while Super Cruise® is active.
How Safe Is Super Cruise®?
Super Cruise® has been widely recognized as one of the most advanced hands-free driving systems on the market. In fact, it has been driven hundreds of millions of kilometers hands-free with documented safety performance across the Super Cruise® network — and new compatible roads are continuously being added via over-the-air updates.
That said, Super Cruise® is not fully autonomous driving in the sense that it has limitations — it works only on specific mapped routes and requires the driver to remain alert and ready to take over. Conditions such as heavy snow, low visibility, construction zones, or unmapped roads will cause the system to disengage.
For drivers at Kipp Scott Cadillac looking to elevate their highway driving experience, Super Cruise® delivers true hands-free capability that makes long trips more relaxing and convenient. With intuitive activation, helpful lane-change assistance, and a robust safety-monitoring framework, Super Cruise® represents the forefront of today’s driver-assist technology — while still emphasizing that you remain in charge of your Cadillac at all times.
